What is the Default Address and how is it used?

A default address (also known as a catch-all address) ensures that any mail sent to invalid or nonexistent email addresses within your domain is handled appropriately. Here’s how to configure it:

  1. Log in to cPanel:

    • Access your cPanel account using your credentials.
  2. Navigate to Default Address:

    • Click on the Default Address icon under the Email section.
  3. Choose the Domain:

    • From the Send all unrouted email for the following domain menu, select the domain for which you want to set or update a default address.
  4. Select an Option:

    • You have several choices for handling unrouted email:
      • Discard the email while your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message:
        • This option sends an error message to the sender, notifying them that the recipient does not exist.
        • You can customize the error message in the Failure Message (seen by sender) text box.
      • Forward to Email Address:
        • Choose this setting to forward mail to another address.
        • Enter the email address or your cPanel account’s username in the Forward to Email Address text box.
      • Advanced Options:
        • Click Advanced Options to explore additional settings:
          • Forward to your system account:
            • Forward mail to the system account.
          • Pipe to a Program:
            • Forward messages to a program at the path you define.
            • For more details, refer to our How to Configure Email Filters documentation.
  5. Save Your Settings:

    • Click Create to save your default address configuration.

Remember, having a default address ensures that you receive all email for your domain, even if there are typos or other issues with the recipient addresses. If you encounter any issues or need further assistance, feel free to explore DanumHost – your trusted web development partner!
